The Manifesting Table
What French Farmers knew about the Power of the Table
One of my favorite purchases as I’ve been furnishing my new sanctuary in Provence has been an old farmers’ table, which I found on France’s equivalent of Etsy. As old farmers’ tables go it’s not that old – maybe half a century as opposed to several centuries in age. Still, it falls within the tradition and symbolism of these tables, which, if I can describe it appropriately, is something like this:
Farmers’ tables were, at their most basic level, just that: tables owned by farmers. They were made from locally sourced wood, usually oak, pine or walnut, and designed simply, with practicality in mind. They served as functional spaces: for food prep, craftwork, school lessons, and, most essentially, as places to partake of meals. One can imagine the kinds of meals that took place at these tables: the freshest of produce, the smelliest of cheeses, the most succulent of whatever domesticated animal or wild game was around the farm, the terroir-est of wines. You know that term farm-to-table. These are that.
What intrigues me more is what happened at these tables besides eating. Which is to say: conversations. Often mundane in nature (“These frogs’ legs are a bit dry.” “I wonder if this heat will subside tomorrow?”). And sometimes revolutionary. During the 18th and 19th centuries especially, when France found itself in a prolonged spell of political and social upheaval, it was around these farmers’ tables that dissidents and rebels (who were often farmers, aka the ‘common people’), discussed plans to overthrow the ruling aristocratic/ autocratic regime, or at least practice their own small acts of defiance. Often these tables came with a small, inconspicuous drawer, where secret documents were kept, hidden away from prying eyes, just in case spies (or worse) showed up at table.
I didn’t know any of this history when I was searching for a long desk for my new sanctuary. What I had was an image, something I’d envisioned when considering what I wanted my surroundings to look like. I even did a vision board and found this image for it. (The young lady at the desk reminds me of my daughter Kate, a true creative - and a true rebel.)
What I had in mind was a space where I could look out the window and be inspired. Where I could let my creative juices flow. Where I could be free of digital distractions and dwell in the world of the senses. Where I could continue to dream up new ideas, create clarity and detail around them, then go forth and manifest them.
I’ve become a true believer in manifestation, which I would describe as: identifying a goal or desire, gaining as much detailed clarity on that as possible (including through vision boarding and journaling), then making it happen through a combination of persistence, positivity, hard work, and dumb luck. This is how Sidecar Counsel came to be. This is how my new life in Provence came to be.
So now that my new (old) table is in its rightful place in front of a window with an inspiring view, I look forward to spending ample time there, dreaming up new possibilities and making them manifest. Some will be mundane; some rebellious, as befitting of the history of this table. And in the spirit of these tables, I will avail myself of its multifunctionality and invite others (you?) to dine here with me. (I’m now seeing a connection between ‘mani-fest’ and ‘many-feasts.’) We may simply have good conversation over a meal made from locally-sourced products. We may stir the beginnings of a revolution. Qui sait?
And the secret drawer? Well, that shall remain the repository for things held in confidence, just like my Sidecar coaching promises.
